Plot Summary of “The Necklace”
Madame Mathilde Loisel, a young woman of modest means, dreams of wealth and luxury. When she borrows a beautiful diamond necklace to attend a prestigious ball, she feels transformed and confident among Parisian high society. After the event, she discovers the necklace is missing and, unable to find it, she and her husband replace it by borrowing heavily to buy an expensive duplicate. Over the next ten years, the Loisels endure a life of grueling debt and hard work to repay their loans, sacrificing comfort and youth. Only afterward does Mathilde learn that the original necklace was an imitation of negligible value.
